After a losing season last year, the volleyball team now has a winning record heading into sectionals October 10.

With seniors Elise Wilcox, Claire Smith, Carlie Giese, Emma Edgar, Ella Machall and Kelsey Nutter leading the team, the varsity girls have successfully bumped, set, and spiked their way through the season, maintaining a winning record.

“The team goals for this season are to go as far as possible in the post season. I want us to continue improving with communication and running a fast offense,” Wilcox (12) said.  She is a setter/right side hitter for the team.

The team came in second at the Wapahani tournament, one of their biggest accomplishments so far.

The coaching staff is entirely new this year. Jessica Holtzclaw was hired at the end of last spring as the new head volleyball coach, and is also an English teacher at Homestead. She brought in her own staff of all women: Alicia, who coaches the freshmen, and Tayanna, who coaches JV.

“[The new coaches] bring a very positive and competitive attitude to the gym, which makes for a great environment,” Wilcox said. “You can tell they love the game and their jobs.”

Wilcox’s personal goals for this season are to become stronger and faster, as well as improve her leadership skills as she transitions onto a college team. She is currently committed to playing at the University of Toledo.

“The team is working hard to achieve big goals in the post season,” Holtzclaw said. “They all treat each other with respect, and they try their best to push each other towards their common goals.”

Holtzclaw said their tenacity is very impressive.
